Passenger Assistance
We will provide DOOR-TO-DOOR service to passengers with special needs. This means we will come to the door of your residence to assist you into our vehicle. (You must be at your door and ready to go).

Wheel Chair and Mobility Aid Securement
All wheelchairs and electronic scooters shall face the front of the bus. Handicapped riders are encouraged to transfer from mobility aid to bus seat if possible. If the rider remains in wheelchair, wheelchair will be secured with securement device and seat belts available on our vehicles. Riders using walkers or having problems can utilize the electric lift to access bus if they wish (ask driver). Stairways-Drivers will only negotiate one step when assisting rider in wheelchair. Household wheelchair ramps shall be inspected by transit supervisor before use.

Schedule your appointments a day or two ahead of time.
Don’t be a “No Show.” Call us if your plans have changed.
Let the Dispatcher know if you have special needs.
Be aware that our buses will only wait three minutes at each stop before moving on to next pick-up.
Be aware that our buses will not wait at your stop but must move on to the next rider right away.
Riders who live more than 5 miles out of Detroit Lakes should give us one day’s advance notice for ride.
Do not make ride arrangements with the drivers. Please call our dispatcher.
Fares
All riders are charged the same fare.

The Transit fare is $1.50 per 5-mile increment, i.e., Audubon $3.00, Frazee $4.50.

Escorts assisting disabled riders are not required to pay. No fare is required for children in car seats.

Tri-Valley Transportation also known as T.H.E. Bus (Tri-Valley Heartland Express) is a division of Tri-Valley Opportunity Council, Inc. Tri-Valley is a community action agency serving citizens since 1965 and an Affirmative Action / Americans with Disabilities / Equal Opportunity Corporation.

T.H.E. Bus is a curb to curb service and provides public transportation services to the general public in eight Minnesota counties, Polk, Red Lake, Norman, Marshall, Kittson, Pennington, Mahnomen, and Clearwater. Buses run through these counties on various days with various destinations. Our public transit buses are available with no age limits or income guidelines. Buses have seating available for up to 40 passengers. Each bus is handicap accessible with two accessible entrances. If passengers are unable to use the door he/she may request the use of the lift. Each driver has been trained to properly use the lift and secure mobility devices within the buses.

Transportation services are used for a variety of reasons, which include; medical, nutritional, social, recreational, shopping, work, school, and other personal activities. Destinations include but not limited to; Grand Forks, Bemidji, Thief River Falls, Fargo/Moorhead, and Crookston. Tri-Valley Transportation provides safe, friendly, and dependable transportation at a reasonable price T.H.E. Bus is funded depending on the service it is provided.

In-town and rural transportation is funded through the Public Transportation grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The grant provides 80% operating costs with 20% local match (fare box). This grant is used to enhance access of people in non-urbanized areas to health care, shopping, education, employment, public services, and recreation. It is used to assist in the maintenance, development, improvement, and use of public transportation systems in non-urbanized areas.

Tri-Valley Heartland Express Bus provides transportation services to the general public in six counties, Polk, Red Lake, Norman, Marshall, and Pennington, and Bagley in Clearwater County. Buses run through these counties on various days and destinations. Public transit buses are available with no age limits or income requirements to ride the bus. Buses have a comfortable 19-25 seating capacity with at least two wheel chair tie downs and a dependable wheel chair lift Transportation service is used for a variety of reasons, which include medical, nutritional, social, recreational, shopping and other personal activities with destinations such as Grand Forks, Bemidji, Thief River Falls, Fargo/Moorhead and Crookston. Tri-Valley Heartland Express provides safe, friendly and dependable transportation to the citizens of the rural area at a reasonable price. Call for a schedule. In Crookston, Thief River Falls, and Bagley the Tri-Valley Heartland Express offers subscription service and general dial a ride service. People that need the transportation on a regular basis at the same time would be considered a subscription service customer. Whether it’s for work, play, rehab or fun, one call, that’s all it takes to set up the subscription service ride. When you call for a ride the bus will pick you up in front of the place you want and drop you off right in front of the place you want to go. A 24 hour notice is encouraged to guarantee your ride. All this for $1.50.

The Tri-Valley Heartland Express can take you where you want to go. For parents this could be a blessing on wheels. Running from 7:30 am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday, the Bus can pick up and deliver children, adults, and young adults anywhere in Crookston, Thief River Falls, and Bagley including after school classes, or daycare, community events, recreation events, and entertainment activities. Open to the public, Red Lake Transit provides door to door transportation on the Red Lake Reservation everyday and to Bemidji on Tuesdays and Fridays. Children 5 years old and younger are not allowed to ride unsupervised. Call for a ride at least 1 hour ahead of time. Costs are $1.00 for adults, 50 cents for elders 55 and older, 50 cents for students, children 5 years and younger ride free.

Transit Alternatives- Providing Transit Services to OtterTail, Rural Clay Counties, Wilken, and now Fargo/Moorhead

Transit Alternatives is a public transportation system with handicapped accessible buses available to certain areas of OtterTail, Wilken, and Clay counties. Curb to curb services are offered with special care given to children and seniors. Services for users with three and four wheeled mobility aids are available.

We recommend reserving your ride two days in advance, but last minute trips can often be accommodated as well. Professional drivers are trained in CPR, First Aid, Passenger Assistance, and Defensive Driving. Our friendly drivers will assist passengers with a steadying arm and are glad to help with small packages.

Senior Volunteer Support Services:

Volunteers provide services such as grocery shopping assistance and local transportation for medical or other pre-approved appointments.  (We are unable to provide MA Medical Transportation)  Services are billed on a sliding fee scale.  Requests must be made 3-5 days before the need.

Homemaking and Chore Services:

Homemakers provide light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry assistance, and shopping as needed.  Services available through county alternative care or elderly waiver, long term care insurance, and private pay basis.

Respite Care:

7 days a week 24 hours per day based on availability.  Certified nursing assistants or qualified volunteers provide relief for the primary caregivers of persons who are chronically ill or living with a disability.  There must be an identified primary caregiver to qualify for this service.  Respite care is available through county alternative care or elderly waiver, long term care insurance and also on a private pay basis on a sliding fee scale.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers:

An evidence based series of six week educational classes focusing on the needs of the caregiver, or family and friends who are caring for older adults, suffering from stroke, Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s disease or similar long term conditions.  The class provides skills and confidence to better care for yourself while caring for others.

Caregiver Coaching and Assessment:

Providing education and emotional support to caregivers.  The support group provides an opportunity for caregivers to say what they are feeing in a supportive environment while learning new strategies and resources in our community.

A holistic, client-centered approach to caring for older adults or others facing ongoing health challenges.  Working with individuals, elders and families, the expertise of Aging Life Care Professionals provides the answers at a time of uncertainty through: Assessment and Service Coordination; Planning and Problem-Solving, Education and Advocacy; Family Caregiver Coaching.

ACT on Alzheimer’s:

A national program designed to create dementia friendly communities that involves: 1) Raising awareness of Alzheimer’s, 2) Transforming attitudes, 3) Moving people to action, and 4) Supporting family and friend caregivers by providing accessible information, resources, and in-person support.  There are multiple options and a variety of services and package plans.  Contact us to inquire about specific costs and to find out if you are eligible to receive a reduced rate.

Metro Area Transit (MAT) operates Monday through Saturday, offering 25 routes to provide you with affordable, quality transportation. All buses are wheelchair-accessible.

Special User Card Renewal: All passengers who receive discounted fares on MAT fixed route due to age or disability will need to complete a short renewal form. Forms are available through the MAT drivers, GTC Dispatch and the Transit Administrative Offices. Please complete the renewal form prior to June 1, 2010. Passengers who have a Special User Card for MAT Paratransit, the door-to-door transportation, will be receiving a recertification letter in the mail within the next few weeks.

Token Retirement: MAT will retire bus tokens and discontinue their usage on January 1, 2011. Passengers will be able to use their current inventory of tokens through December 31, 2010. Any tokens must be used by this date; any remaining tokens will not be exchanged and no monetary refunds will be given. On February 1, 2010, MAT discontinued the sale of tokens and began selling single-ride tickets, in packets of 20, in place of tokens. For more information, click HERE (.PDF).

MAT Completes Farebox Conversion: MAT has installed new fareboxes on all of its fixed route buses. The former MAT passes will no longer be accepted on any bus – passengers need to exchange any old transit passes for new MAT passes. Any remaining time or rides will be transferred onto new passes.
