Community Resource Connections:

Our goal is to help you gain access to the services that will allow you to participate in preventative health care.  Staying healthy is easier, and far less expensive, that getting well.

We are established nonprofit service providers and caregivers in your community.  We are NOT county, state or federal employees, nor do we work for health management systems like Prime West Health.  We are reimbursed through contracts and grants that enable us to serve you without charging for that service.

We are trained and certified by MNsure to assist with online application for health insurance in Minnesota.  The online application is faster and more reliable than  paper applications submitted to the county system.

We work cooperatively with your County and State Human Service Departments, Minnesota Care, and MNsure.  We serve as your advocate and guide.  We also work with area MNsure Brokers who can help you choose the best Qualified Health Plan; if that is what you qualify for through the MNsure application system.

Staff in all of our locations respond to this number:  218-333-0880

How Our Services Work:

  • You call a convenient site and schedule an appointment
  • We explain how MNsure works and what items are needed at your appointment
  • We provide computer and internet access; and we enter your data
  • We provide document printing and faxing at no cost to you
  • We help you create your own MNsure online account
  • We guide you through the MNsure application question by question
  • We assist you in interpreting application questions and how they relate to your situation
  • You receive a copy of your completed application and account information
  • We will keep a copy of your account information and application on file; but only with your written approval
  • We help troubleshoot application problems
  • We provide advocacy if an appeal is needed
  • We cannot choose for your or recommend Qualified Health Plans; but will refer you to certified Brokers who are able to educate and guide you

PROGRAMS OF UNITED WAY OF BEMIDJI AREA

BACKPACK BUDDIES
In the Bemidji area, 1 in 5 children experience food insecurity and hunger. The Backpack Buddies program was developed to help ensure that children in the Bemidji school district have access to nutritious, non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations.
The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child friendly, non-perishable, and easily consumed free of charge. An average weekly menu consists of: 2 entrees, 1 snack, 2 breakfast items, 1 vegetable, 2 fruits, and 2 milks, and 1 high protein item. The food is purchased from the North Country Food Bank and community groups and volunteers package the food each month.
The food packs are discretely distributed to children, as best determined by the school, on the last day before weekends and all scheduled school breaks/holiday breaks.
Thanks to Sanford Health, the program has expanded to feed more than 450 children, who have been referred by school staff as experiencing food insecurity or hunger, each weekend and school break. The program currently serves all Bemidji school district schools.

COATS FOR THE COMMUNITY
Each year donations of gently used, clean winter coats and outerwear for men, women, children and infants are collected. More than 3,000 cold-weather items are collected and distributed to our Bemidji neighbors to keep them warm and dry during the winter.

HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR KIDS
Each year between 800 and 1000 children, ages 0-16, experience a joyful Christmas thanks to the generosity and kindness of others. Parents or legal guardians register for the Holiday Gifts for Kids program and have the opportunity to choose a gift for their child on distribution day. In addition, each family receives a board game to enjoy together.

SOMEONE SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS
United Way of Bemidji Area partners with Ken K. Thompson Jewelry, KB101 Radio, and The Bemidji Pioneer, to recognize the value of volunteerism.
The Someone Special Volunteer Program provides an opportunity for any individual, organization, business, or group, to recognize up to two volunteers who have made a difference within the community through volunteering.

Havenwood….where residents are cared for without regard to age, sex, race, color, creed, religion, handicap, or national origin.  The Home is licensed by the State of Minnesota, certified for Medicare and Medicaid, and complies with all standards mandated by regulating agencies.

Havenwood Care Center (formerly Beltrami County Nursing Home) has a long history of caring for the elderly.  Originally, long-term care services were provided at the Lake Julia farm, 15 miles north of Bemidji.  From 1917 until 1968, that facility was one of the few in the region dedicated to the ill and aged who required long-term care.  In 1968, the old home was retired and a new 85 bed facility opened at our current location.  In 1974, a 48 bed addition extended capacity to 133 beds.  We currently utilize 90 beds.

Although the site has changed, the same dedication and spirit of love and understanding exists.  We continue our pledge to maintain the highest possible standards of nursing care and to provide social, recreational, intellectual, spiritual, physical and re-motivational activities specifically designed to meet individual needs.

Havenwood is a place where the joys, frustrations, and excitement of living are shared by residents and staff.
