Northwest Technical College prepares students for fulfilling careers in highly skilled, sought-after fields. Our certificate, diploma and degree programs are carefully designed to serve graduates and employers in northern Minnesota.
Northwest Technical College offers 21 programs under six major areas of study. They are set up on semesters and typically begin fall semester in late August and in spring semester in early January. A summer semester is also offered which begins in late May.
Applications are accepted up until two weeks before the start of a semester on a space available basis.

Services are delivered by knowledgeable, respectful and compassionate caregivers while honoring the wisdom that exists in all cultures for the celebration of birth. Mewinzha is a non-profit organization created to promote healthy birthing practices by working with: doulas and breastfeeding coaches to empower women during pregnancy, labor, delivery and breastfeeding. Provide support and educational services for pregnant women and their families. Reclaiming and promoting healthy birth practices for Aniishinaabe people.

We believe in You ~ is the foundation of our home visiting program for any pregnant woman, mother or caregiver of children up to the age of 3. Dads are encouraged to participate and are welcomed. At Happy Dancing Turtle, S.O.I.L.s is what we do. It means the practice and promotion of Sustainability; Outreach to our Minnesota community; the Innovation to develop meaningful programs and spur local entrepreneurship; Learning/Sharing by offering workshops, conferences, and classes; and providing Leadership and fostering champions in our communities.
Eco-Camp: Teaches sustainability, environmental responsibility, and health eating habits through games, field trips, and other activities. Four age groups: (1-2, 3-4, 5-6). Four sessions during the summer, call for times.
Back to Basics: A daylong event with a focus on environmental stewardship, eating healthy, living sustainably and fun. Usually the last week in January, visit website for details.

Headwaters Music & Arts is an independent non-profit located in downtown Bemidji. Our mission is to provide opportunities for creativity through instruction and inspire the community through music and the arts. We believe that we can further enrich the health and wellness of individuals and the community by offering exceptional music and art education programs and events to all.
Our music program includes one-on-one music lessons on a wide variety of instruments as well as vocal instruction, pre-school parent-child music classes, and music enrichment events. Community initiatives include a senior chorus, bell choir, and monthly open mic nights. Art offerings include pottery for youth and adults, child and teen after school art clubs, and workshops and classes for kids and adults. Financial assistance is available for most youth activities.
Gym Bin: Gymnastics instruction for all levels from 3 years to Level 9 Aerials. Home of the Bemidji High School Gymnastics Team.
Kindiland Learning Center: A licensed day care for toddlers, preschool children and school aged children. Open from 6:45am – 6:00pm each week day. Full or part time options. Family rates available. Drop in care is offered based on availability and the completion of required paperwork.

CHILD CARE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (CCAP)
Child care assistance is available to parents who are receiving assistance under the Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) and parents whose income is at or below 175% of the Federal Poverty guideline and are in an approved activity. It is important for parents to know their child is well-cared for while they are at work, looking for work, obtaining training or going to school in order to secure employment. Application is required to have eligibility determined. CCAP may not cover all child care costs. Parental amounts depend on the family’s income, the number of people in the family, and how much the child care provider charges. The goal is to assist the family to maintain employment and gain self-sufficiency.
CHILD SUPPORT
Every child needs financial and emotional support and every child has the right to support from both parents. Minnesota’s child support program benefits children by enforcing parental responsibility for child support.
Either parent of a child may apply or qualify for certain support services from the Child Support Unit. Depending on the circumstances associated with the case, there may be fees assessed for collection unless the applicant receives public assistance (Minnesota Family Investment Program, Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare, or Childcare Assistance.)

The American Indian Resource Center is an environment steeped in cultural heritage and tradition – a gathering place that honors the past and helps shape the future. A place to come together and learn for students and community members alike.
The Bemidji Area Indian Center intends to serve as a community resource hub for the American Indian families living in and around the Bemidji area.
Exhibits are hands-on and illustrate aspects of science. Off-site demonstrations and programs are also possible. HSC’s 7500 square foot exhibit floor features over 50 engaging and hands-on exhibits including live animals. The Science Store features unique science and nature-oriented gifts, books, and toys. Birthday parties and other celebrations can be accommodated, call for pricing and reservations.

Demonstrations and Hands-on Activities: Fee-based science programs provided by staff members upon request by schools, group leaders, family birthday events, or others. Watermark features four galleries that are free and open to the public, displaying work by regional and national artists. Other amenities include a retail gallery shop and education studio. Watermark presents artist talks, workshops, and education opportunities for all ages, and hosts the annual Art in the Park every July.
Civil and legal services without charge to low income or elderly citizens. Income and asset poverty guidelines apply. Bemidji office serves Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, and Mahnomen Counties.
Our Mission: The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is a faith-based, caring place that listens to those who are experiencing food insecurity. We work with our partners to be inclusive and to provide fresh, nourishing foods for those living in Beltrami County and the Bemidji School District.
Households may make one visit per calendar month which will provide about 10 meals, or 3-5 days of food per household. Services are based on income eligibility. We are also a distribution site for Nutrition Assistance Program for Sneiors (NAPS) boxes for income eligible seniors 60 and over. Applications are available at the food shelf.
Please bring a current ID if you have one. We will need the names and birthdates of household members and the gross income for the household.

The Northwoods Queer Outreach is an initiative that aims to increase queer and transgender representation, support and acceptance across campus and within the Bemidji community.
We provide training and resources for organizational staff, educators, and healthcare providers to better serve queer and transgender customers, students, patients and clients. Our workshops can range from 2SLGBTQ+ 101 material to information and activities tailored to the needs of your organization.
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Northwoods/Beltrami is an active affiliate. They are located in the Bemidji area and primarily facilitated by Jim Aakhus. Jim was the former President of the NAMI North Central affiliate in the Brainerd area, but now lives in Bemidji. He is a family member and a retired mental health professional. He has been networking within the mental health community. He in on his 4th term as a board member at Hope House in Bemidji & continues to serve as a volunteer.
NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering
addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs. There is
only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using. We suggest that you keep an open mind and give yourself a break. Our program is a set of principles written so simply that we can follow them in our daily lives. The most important thing about them is that they work. There are no strings attached to NA. We are not affiliated with any other organizations. We have no initiation fees or dues, no pledges to sign, no promises to make to anyone. We are not connected with any political, religious, or law enforcement groups, and are under no surveillance at any time. Anyone may join us regardless of age, race, sexual identity, creed, religion, or lack of religion. We are not interested in what or how much you used or who your connections were, what you have done in the past, how much or how little you have, but only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help. The newcomer is the most important person at any meeting, because we can only keep what we have by giving it away. We have learned from our group experience that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Shawn Whiting has nearly a decade of experience in Community Counseling. During that time, he has worked with individuals, couples, families and groups of all ages. He has experience with the majority of mental health diagnoses but believes you don’t have to have a mental illness diagnosis to benefit from counseling.
Shawn takes a whole person, strengths based approach to counseling. He has specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy), TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and the Duluth Model for Domestic Violence Interventions.
Shawn holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of North Dakota. He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC, License #934) and Board Certified Supervisor in the state of Minnesota.
