Mahnomen County Heartland Express provides general public transportation throughout Mahnomen County. Heartland Express provides dial-a-ride and flexible route bus service throughout Mahnomen County. We also provide trips to and from White Earth and Ogema in Becker County.
Three daily routes will be running Monday-Friday. A bus will be going to Fargo once a week for anyone who wishes to shop or has a medical appointment. Medical appointments need to be scheduled no earlier than 10 am and all clients must be done with their appointments no later than 2:45 pm.
Volunteer Services to Fargo for medical purposes will be on Wednesday. Anyone who wants a ride must call into the transit office at least one day in advance to schedule a ride. Appointments need to be made between 9 am and 2 pm.

Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the official U. S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization with almost 62,000 members nationwide. Minnesota is home to 21 Squadrons across the state. CAP Corporation and its members own and operate more than 500 light aircraft, the world’s largest civilian fleet, and volunteers fly about 140,000 hours each year on CAP missions.
CAP won fame during World War II for its coastal patrol and other all-volunteer civilian defense activities. Today, CAP members perform more than 95 percent of inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. CAP also conducts a wide variety of emergency service missions including disaster relief and counter-drug activities.CAP volunteers take a leading role in aerospace education and conduct one of America’s finest youth programs, the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program.
The Cadet Program is open to youth ages 12-18 years of age. Cadets have opportunities to participate in many activities including search and rescue, disaster relief, survival training, radio communications, land navigation, model rocketry, leadership training, first aid, physical fitness, orientation flights (aboard a CAP or military aircraft) and much more.
Civil Air Patrol instills the organization’s Core Values in its cadets — integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect. CAP’s 23,000 cadets are drug-free role models in their communities and schools. The cadet program also offers youth in-depth training in leadership and enables them to apply classroom principles to real-world needs.
You don’t have to be a pilot or need military experience to join Civil Air Patrol. Civil Air Patrol re also not obligated to join any branch of the military service.
A church led ministry and emergency program organized to provide short term assistance for those who fall through the cracks and who need immediate help and have nowhere else to turn in the short run. In addition to providing financial aid for food, gas, rent, and utility payments, Churches United also assists individuals and families through counseling and referrals to other community agencies and resources.

The Blackduck Area History and Art Center (BAHAC) is located at the top of the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway in northern Minnesota. Although some artifacts are specific to this area, we provide a “stepping back in time” experience that can be enjoyed whether you are specifically interested in this area, or history in general. The displays excite children as well as adults, and indeed we feel a special mission to bring the past to life for children.
The co-located TIN PAN gALLErY focuses on giving local artists a place to showcase their works. Featured artists’ shows are generally on display for a month. In between shows there is always an interesting variety of art on exhibit. We have truly fulfilled our mission of providing art opportunities for all ages, as we have featured everything from pre-school and kindergarten art project displays to a special artist show for an artist in her eighth decade.
In the year 2000, the Blandin/Blackduck Visioning Committee began collecting historical memorabilia as part of its 2001 Centennial Celebration planning process. The items collected came from the geographic area covered by the Blackduck School District, a 435 square mile area that includes 13 townships and the cities of Blackduck, Tenstrike, Funkley and Squaw Lake. The need for a permanent storage area for all that had been collected spurred discussions about finding a location to store the items. This evolved to the possibility of an actual history center – a place to showcase and preserve our area’s heritage while educating our young people and operating a key attraction for residents and tourists alike. In January 2005, the Blackduck Arts Council decided to partner with the BAHAC to add an arts component to the proposed Center. Working together, the History and Art Center opened its doors to the public August 19, 2006.
We live in a resort area with unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation amidst our scenic forests, lakes and bogs. Although we are a small town we draw people from a large area. We feel fortunate to have a library, movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, city park, restaurants and some pretty interesting shopping opportunities. People travel for miles to visit and shop at Anderson Fabrics Outlet Store. Nearby attractions include the Big Bog State Park, The Lost 40, Chippewa National Forest campgrounds, Camp Rabideau (the most well-preserved CCC Camp in the nation – a National Historic Landmark) and the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway, to name a few. PROGRAMS OF UNITED WAY OF BEMIDJI AREA
BACKPACK BUDDIES
In the Bemidji area, 1 in 5 children experience food insecurity and hunger. The Backpack Buddies program was developed to help ensure that children in the Bemidji school district have access to nutritious, non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations.
The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child friendly, non-perishable, and easily consumed free of charge. An average weekly menu consists of: 2 entrees, 1 snack, 2 breakfast items, 1 vegetable, 2 fruits, and 2 milks, and 1 high protein item. The food is purchased from the North Country Food Bank and community groups and volunteers package the food each month.
The food packs are discretely distributed to children, as best determined by the school, on the last day before weekends and all scheduled school breaks/holiday breaks.
Thanks to Sanford Health, the program has expanded to feed more than 450 children, who have been referred by school staff as experiencing food insecurity or hunger, each weekend and school break. The program currently serves all Bemidji school district schools.
COATS FOR THE COMMUNITY
Each year donations of gently used, clean winter coats and outerwear for men, women, children and infants are collected. More than 3,000 cold-weather items are collected and distributed to our Bemidji neighbors to keep them warm and dry during the winter.
HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR KIDS
Each year between 800 and 1000 children, ages 0-16, experience a joyful Christmas thanks to the generosity and kindness of others. Parents or legal guardians register for the Holiday Gifts for Kids program and have the opportunity to choose a gift for their child on distribution day. In addition, each family receives a board game to enjoy together.

United Way of Bemidji Area partners with Ken K. Thompson Jewelry, KB101 Radio, and The Bemidji Pioneer, to recognize the value of volunteerism.
The Someone Special Volunteer Program provides an opportunity for any individual, organization, business, or group, to recognize up to two volunteers who have made a difference within the community through volunteering.
Community Resource Connections (CRC) is a nonprofit membership organization serving Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater and Hubbard Counties.
MNsure Navigators: Application for Medical Assistance, Minnesota Care, and Qualified Health Plans offered through the state of Minnesota’s health exchange. CRC staff provide computer and internet access, and question by question guidance. No cost to you. Appointments required.
Service Access: Assistance finding the resources you need. CRC staff will educate you about your service options, assist you with service applications, and advocate for you when the system doesn’t work as you need it to work. No cost to you.
Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS): CRC’s Blackduck office site takes applications and serves as a dissemination point for food commodities provided through North Country Food Bank. Eligibility is based on age (60+) and income (call for guidelines). Free monthly food boxes containing a $40 value of non-perishable food items.
Community Service Agency Membership: CRC works with community service agencies to organize and publish a hard copy resource directory as well as this electronic version. Other member services include: facilitation of networking meetings, cooperative marketing events, nonprofit start up guidance, and program support.

Great River Rescue is a no-kill, 501(c)3 non-profit animal shelter dedicated to housing cats and dogs for the purpose of transitioning them to loving forever homes. Great River Rescue serves as a community resource, and advocates for kind, responsible pet care, encouraging a community of responsible companion animal guardians, eliminating the community’s need to euthanize dogs and cats as a means of population control, and promoting a society where companion animals become more valued.

Great River Rescue operates a low-cost spay/neuter and animal wellness program, Pet Fixers. Clinics are held one or two weekends per month from April to November. Regional Navigator for sexually exploited and trafficked individuals
Operated by non-profit, Canvas Health, Crisis Text Line allows users to communicate with trained counselors via confidential text messaging. Counselors help people of all ages and walks of life get to an emotionally and physically safe place and then direct them to community resources that can provide longer-term support. They serve many counties and all Tribal Nations located in Minnesota. Text “MN” to 741741.
Our Mission: The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is a faith-based, caring place that listens to those who are experiencing food insecurity. We work with our partners to be inclusive and to provide fresh, nourishing foods for those living in Beltrami County and the Bemidji School District.
Households may make one visit per calendar month which will provide about 10 meals, or 3-5 days of food per household. Services are based on income eligibility. We are also a distribution site for Nutrition Assistance Program for Sneiors (NAPS) boxes for income eligible seniors 60 and over. Applications are available at the food shelf.

Serving the Bemidji, MN area’s seniors, Touch of Home offers quality senior and assisted living services. Our mission: enriching the lives of those we serve with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity. Assisted living facilities offer help with ADLs such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with medications. Many facilities also have centers for medical care. We have a nurse on-call at all times.
The Garden Place is an assisted living facility in Bagley, MN. The Garden Place offers activities at their location for residents. These activities generally allow residents to maintain healthy lifestyles by encouraging movement and socializing with their peers.
Being able to chat with other residents becomes an important part of many peoples’ lives and The Garden Place offers common spaces indoors to support that need. The benefit of living in an assisted living community is that making meals can be costly and time consuming process so The Garden Place provides meals for residents.
Staff is awake and available 24 hours a day so if any emergencies occur no matter the time, there will be someone ready to help. Making sure residents with diabetes monitor their insulin levels is clearly an important task and The Garden Place can help with that task. If a resident needs assistance moving from a bed to a wheelchair, this facility has staff who can help.
A four county consortium (Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods) for improving the path of mental health in the region; consumers, families, and providers participate. Meetings are the first Monday of each month, 1-3pm, in a different county each month. Beltrami residents call Jeff Lind.
We offer tools and training for employment and for helping seniors remain independent and active. As Minnesota’s accessible reading source we also transcribe books and other materials into alternative formats, including audio and braille. We assist Minnesotans who are blind, DeafBlind, losing vision, or who have another disability that makes it difficult to read print.

Minnesota Relay is a free, federally mandated Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) program that allows individuals who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, or speech disabled to place and receive telephone calls.
A specially trained communications assistant (CA) facilitates the telephone conversation between the person with a hearing or speech disability and other individuals.
Calls can be made to anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All calls are completely confidential.
Minnesota Relay is administered by the Telecommunications Access Minnesota (TAM) program within the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and is funded by a monthly surcharge on each wired and wireless telephone access line, and a fee on each pre-paid wireless retail transaction, in the state.
The state contracts with T-Mobile (formerly Sprint) to provide Minnesota Relay services.
Lighthouse provides services on a 24-hour or hourly basis. These services are designed around each individual and may include assistance with health and personal care, safety, nutrition, finances, activities of daily living, and training to independently perform these activities.
Lighthouse operates 5 homes that have 24/7 staffing to help fit the needs of individuals who have a disability. Lighthouse Lodge acknowledges the intrinsic value of each individual, regardless of position. Each person who lives in an Ecumen community has different interests and passions. Empowering each person’s individual being is essential to honoring those we serve. The Ecumen Lifestyle Covenant is a partnership between our staff and the people we serve in assisted living and memory care.
By signing this covenant, we and each of our customers make a joint pledge to take responsibility for our customer’s lifestyle choices and desires. We (the staff) pledge to support each individual’s decisions and commit to providing him or her with the resources we have available to help our person be successful and fulfilled in their home.
A place to enjoy the day away from home while having on site care services. Nutritious meals and snacks, along with therapeutic recreational and social activities. Health and personal care services are available, including medication administration, health monitoring, incontinence care, bathing and foot care.
Transportation is available within a certain radius during program hours.

CHI St. Joseph’s Health Community Dental Clinic provides long-term, comprehensive dental care for people with state-provided insurance plans.

- Reduced-rate dental care through WIC

Preventative services include cleanings, sealants on children’s molars, fluoride treatments, and oral hygiene instruction. When necessary our staff dentists complete surgical services on site or refer patients to the appropriate specialist.
Community Dental Clinic staff also provide outreach and education to students in area schools.
Bemidji Regional Interdistrict Council (BRIC) is an agency of eleven member school districts that have joined together to provide services in the area of special education. The mission of the Bemidji Regional Interdistrict Council Cooperative is to ensure the provision of appropriate, comprehensive and quality services to identified children and their families within the member Districts of BRIC in North Central Minnesota.

Mahube-Otwa provides services for low income and elderly persons living in Mahnomen, Hubbard, Becker, Otter Tail and Wadena counties.
Mahube-Otwa is a private, non-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board of directors representing the low income, public and private sectors of the community.

Core services included: Transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, or other errands; light housekeeping on an occasional basis, minor handyman services, friendly visits and phone calls, ramp building, and respite care. Other services include: Geriatric Care Management, respite care, and caregiver discussion groups.
Safe, reliable transportation for the public as well as contracting with other agencies that need transportation services. We work with Veteran’s Services, Community Education, and DAC, Social Services and others. Connections to Jefferson Bus Lines and the Executive Shuttle to Minneapolis Airport.
