Family Safety Network (FSN) is a non-profit organization providing advocacy, support, and referral services to domestic violence victims and their families since 1993. Family Safety Network was founded by a group of concerned citizens who saw a need for this service in the community. We have been actively working with victim and survivors of domestic violence since then.

On any given day in the state of Minnesota, 1,975 adults and children are victims of domestic violence and 47.7% of those happen in rural Minnesota. Over the past 12 months we have provided 13,133 services to clients throughout our area townships. We have assisted 703 families: including 60 homeless clients and 151 clients needing emergency shelter. We provided emergency financial assistance to 516 victims and their children.
Last year we shared that our most pressing emerging need would be shelter. Today, we are happy to share that we were able to create a program using the Hotel/Motel Voucher Shelter System. There are no Domestic Violence Shelters in our service area; this program allows us to provide emergency shelter at the time of crisis and our programs allow us to create a person-centered advocacy plan to move families to housing stability and break the cycle of abuse.
Our mission to change the course of children’s lives by stabilizing families and strengthening mental health is woven into everything we do. Our goal is to help youth and families achieve and maintain safety, permanency, and well-being. We provide a continuum of services to help youth and families recover, rehabilitate, and reintegrate to live happier, healthier lives.
Nexus-Kindred Family Healing provides:
Foster Care: for youth with unique needs, ages birth through 21, who can benefit from support with a family setting. Individualized support plans for youth. Careful assessment of youths’ needs to match with a qualified foster home. Assessment of youth’s needs and strengths using the CANS assessment tool- Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths. Special care for youth with complex medical conditions that might otherwise require hospitalization or institutional care. Support services to youth ages 14 and older who are transitioning to independent living.
Adoption Services: Nexus-Kindred Family Healing is designated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services to license adoptive homes and place youth who are under state or tribal guardianship for the purpose of adoption. Services provided free of charge include: Adoption Training and Education, Adoption Home Studies and Updates, Relative Adoption Services, Child-specific Recruitment, Child Placement Services, and Post-Adoption Services.

Clear Waters Life Center (CWLC) is a multi-faceted 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with two locations in Northern Minnesota. We provide a variety of free and low cost services through four programs and five businesses. Our nonprofit businesses provide vocational training for our MSH residents volunteer opportunities and quality, affordable, and used merchandise to our customers.
Our community based programs focuses on helping youth, seniors, and addiction recovering men by building lives, growing relationships, and imparting hope.
Mustard Seed Homes (MSH) is a recovery and aftercare residential program for adult men providing support groups, vocational and life skills training, and steps to developing a healthy spiritual and physical life. As an outreach ministry of Clear Waters Life Center, MSH is a faith-based, 12-month, residential men’s program that provides training in a safe environment, to maintain sobriety, stabilize mental health, and transition to independence. We focus on development in two areas: life skills and vocational/occupational training. Life skills include budgeting, planning and preparing nutritious meals, time management, and personal health through exercise. Vocational and occupational training included 2-5 hours of adult education weekly, experience in building construction, using a commercial kitchen, furniture repair, janitorial services, helping in a greenhouse and garden center, and retail.
MSH is funded in part with housing support and supportive services from the department of human services. Applicants who meet DHS requirements can complete this program with no personal costs.

Youth Connection is an afterschool youth program that provides a safe place for play, mentoring, leadership training, and family and community connections. We focus on three things: creativity, being active, and teaching and embodying our core values of honor, respect, teamwork, relationships, encouragement, faith, and safety. CWLC hosts Celebrate Recovery meetings throughout the year. Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12-step recovery program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain, or addiction of any kind. It is a safe place to find community and freedom from the issues that are controlling your life.
CWLC offers counseling services in a variety of areas for all ages. Appointments required, call ahead to schedule.
Adult basic education is offered Tuesdays 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Wednesday 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. at our Clearbrook location. We believe that education never goes out of style. Our offering are designed to meet you where you are. This is a free service, call ahead to set up your individualized training.
Shop at the Top is our volunteer operated thrift store in Clearbrook where we sell clothing for the whole family as well as home goods, games, pet supplies, books, small appliances, and knick-knacks. The proceeds from Shop at the Top goes to maintaining our buildings. We are always interested in volunteers, you can call our office or stop in to get more information. We take donations during business hours. Located on the 3rd Floor of Clearbrook site. Hours are Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Restore It! is our used furniture shop in Clearbrook, as well as, custom furniture crafting and restoration business. Our MSH residents learn life and vocational skills by creating custom furniture pieces and restoring furniture. We take donations during business hours. Located on the 3rd Floor of Clearbrook site. Hours are Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Grow It! our greenhouse and garden center in Gonvick. We grow many varieties of flowers and vegetables starting mid-May to early July. If you need help putting planters together, we also provide commission planting services.
Fitness in Clearbrook is a weight room and gym. Membership fees are low and help us maintain the equipment.

The Clearwater Day Activity Center focuses on each individual’s needs to develop a specialized program in the areas of Home Living, Community Integration, Employment, and Independence. With one-on-one and group-centered training, those that attend the Clearwater DAC become more independent in daily living skills, are better able to contribute and interact within their community, and build lasting relationships through outside employment and group activities.
The participants at the Clearwater DAC enjoy a variety of activities from shopping, picnics at the park, bowling, and Special Olympics to family outings and real-life jobs within the area. Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the official U. S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization with almost 62,000 members nationwide. Minnesota is home to 21 Squadrons across the state. CAP Corporation and its members own and operate more than 500 light aircraft, the world’s largest civilian fleet, and volunteers fly about 140,000 hours each year on CAP missions.
CAP won fame during World War II for its coastal patrol and other all-volunteer civilian defense activities. Today, CAP members perform more than 95 percent of inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. CAP also conducts a wide variety of emergency service missions including disaster relief and counter-drug activities.CAP volunteers take a leading role in aerospace education and conduct one of America’s finest youth programs, the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program.
The Cadet Program is open to youth ages 12-18 years of age. Cadets have opportunities to participate in many activities including search and rescue, disaster relief, survival training, radio communications, land navigation, model rocketry, leadership training, first aid, physical fitness, orientation flights (aboard a CAP or military aircraft) and much more.
Civil Air Patrol instills the organization’s Core Values in its cadets — integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect. CAP’s 23,000 cadets are drug-free role models in their communities and schools. The cadet program also offers youth in-depth training in leadership and enables them to apply classroom principles to real-world needs.
You don’t have to be a pilot or need military experience to join Civil Air Patrol. Civil Air Patrol re also not obligated to join any branch of the military service.
The Blackduck Area History and Art Center (BAHAC) is located at the top of the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway in northern Minnesota. Although some artifacts are specific to this area, we provide a “stepping back in time” experience that can be enjoyed whether you are specifically interested in this area, or history in general. The displays excite children as well as adults, and indeed we feel a special mission to bring the past to life for children.
The co-located TIN PAN gALLErY focuses on giving local artists a place to showcase their works. Featured artists’ shows are generally on display for a month. In between shows there is always an interesting variety of art on exhibit. We have truly fulfilled our mission of providing art opportunities for all ages, as we have featured everything from pre-school and kindergarten art project displays to a special artist show for an artist in her eighth decade.
In the year 2000, the Blandin/Blackduck Visioning Committee began collecting historical memorabilia as part of its 2001 Centennial Celebration planning process. The items collected came from the geographic area covered by the Blackduck School District, a 435 square mile area that includes 13 townships and the cities of Blackduck, Tenstrike, Funkley and Squaw Lake. The need for a permanent storage area for all that had been collected spurred discussions about finding a location to store the items. This evolved to the possibility of an actual history center – a place to showcase and preserve our area’s heritage while educating our young people and operating a key attraction for residents and tourists alike. In January 2005, the Blackduck Arts Council decided to partner with the BAHAC to add an arts component to the proposed Center. Working together, the History and Art Center opened its doors to the public August 19, 2006.
We live in a resort area with unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation amidst our scenic forests, lakes and bogs. Although we are a small town we draw people from a large area. We feel fortunate to have a library, movie theater, bowling alley, golf course, city park, restaurants and some pretty interesting shopping opportunities. People travel for miles to visit and shop at Anderson Fabrics Outlet Store. Nearby attractions include the Big Bog State Park, The Lost 40, Chippewa National Forest campgrounds, Camp Rabideau (the most well-preserved CCC Camp in the nation – a National Historic Landmark) and the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway, to name a few. Community Resource Connections (CRC) is a nonprofit membership organization serving Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater and Hubbard Counties.
MNsure Navigators: Application for Medical Assistance, Minnesota Care, and Qualified Health Plans offered through the state of Minnesota’s health exchange. CRC staff provide computer and internet access, and question by question guidance. No cost to you. Appointments required.
Service Access: Assistance finding the resources you need. CRC staff will educate you about your service options, assist you with service applications, and advocate for you when the system doesn’t work as you need it to work. No cost to you.
Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS): CRC’s Blackduck office site takes applications and serves as a dissemination point for food commodities provided through North Country Food Bank. Eligibility is based on age (60+) and income (call for guidelines). Free monthly food boxes containing a $40 value of non-perishable food items.
Community Service Agency Membership: CRC works with community service agencies to organize and publish a hard copy resource directory as well as this electronic version. Other member services include: facilitation of networking meetings, cooperative marketing events, nonprofit start up guidance, and program support.

A church led ministry and emergency program organized to provide short term assistance for those who fall through the cracks and who need immediate help and have nowhere else to turn in the short run. In addition to providing financial aid for food, gas, rent, and utility payments, Churches United also assists individuals and families through counseling and referrals to other community agencies and resources.

Referrals are made as needed to area agency and businesses. A photo I.D. is required for all vouchers. A valid drivers license and photocopiable proof of valid insurance is required for all gas vouchers. Screenshots and/or cell phone “proof” is not accepted.

The Bemidji Area Office (BAO) provides service and support to 34 Federally-recognized Tribes and 4 Urban Indian Health programs located in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tribal Health services are provided through 11 P.L. 93-638 Title V compacts and 23 Title I contracts. Urban Indian Health programs are located in Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; Milwaukee, WI; and Minneapolis, MN. Tribes in the Bemidji Area include Ojibwe (Chippewa), Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Mohican, Oneida, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Sioux.
The BAO operates 3 Federal/direct service programs on behalf of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians and the White Earth Band of Chippewa Indians of Minnesota. These Federal/direct service programs, Cass Lake Hospital, Red Lake Hospital, and White Earth Health Center, are staffed by approximately 500 federal civil service employees and Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Officers. These federal employees are comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, laboratory technicians, radiology technicians, behavioral health practitioners, dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, optometrists, optical technicians, dietitians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physical therapists, engineers, sanitarians, equipment technicians, health information managers, administrators, acquisition, supply, finance, information technology and clerical staff. In addition, there are numerous specialty clinics provided in our Federal/direct service programs by local private health care specialists.
Tribal and Urban programs directly employ a multitude of health care providers and allied staff such as, mental health, substance abuse counselors, and community health nurses and representatives. Services not available through Tribal or BAO Federal/direct service programs may be delivered through Contract Health Services (CHS).

Headwaters Music & Arts is an independent non-profit located in downtown Bemidji. Our mission is to provide opportunities for creativity through instruction and inspire the community through music and the arts. We believe that we can further enrich the health and wellness of individuals and the community by offering exceptional music and art education programs and events to all.
Our music program includes one-on-one music lessons on a wide variety of instruments as well as vocal instruction, pre-school parent-child music classes, and music enrichment events. Community initiatives include a senior chorus, bell choir, and monthly open mic nights. Art offerings include pottery for youth and adults, child and teen after school art clubs, and workshops and classes for kids and adults. Financial assistance is available for most youth activities.
